Shooting at NJ and O Today

In case you didn't see it on the Mt. Vernon Square blog, there was a shooting this afternoon at the park at New Jersey and O Streets. There was a brief mention of it on Channel 9 news tonight.

Here are the MPD-3 posts from Asst. Chief Grooms and Captain McCoy, respectively:

Third District units are currently [15:55] on the scene of New Jersey
and O ST
NW - they responded for call for gunshots and found an
adult male shot
twice in the arms - he was taken to Medstar in
stable condition - the
suspect fled on a Bike towards New York Ave
and has been stopped by MPD
- placed under arrest at this time for
ADW gun

An adult male was shot in the park at about 1;45 pm. He was transported
to an area hospital and his injuries are said to be non life
threatening. An immediate investigation was conducted and at about 3;30 pm a
suspect was arrested and charged with this shooting. The weapon has not
been recovered as of this posting. Anyone with information is asked to
call the MPD-SOCC at 202-727-9099.

Oddly, yesterday afternoon around 4:30 at that location I saw a gathering of 6 police cars, a paddy wagon, and a about a dozen police. No obvious reason.

from MPO Barnes:

"There was a shooting yesterday at the park at New Jersey and O ST NW. My self and Officer Varounis arrested the person who did the shooting with the help of the Third District Detectives. The victim who lived in the park had a argument with a lady who lives at 1339 5TH ST Nw about some drugs.

Then a guy from that address came to the park and shot the guy. The Victim was arrested as well because he had three warrants held by the judge. The victim was shot in both arms. You can call the Commander Marco or Lt Neal for more updates because it is not on the list serve."

That would explain the group of police I saw at that address about 3:30 Sunday afternoon.

Thanks once more to Officer Barnes for his excellent police work. Yet one more reason to do what we can to keep this outstanding officer working in PSA 308.

The powers that be seem to want "outstanding" officers like MPO Barnes (and before him Lt Smith), to leave our community. Let's just trust their judgement and have faith in Cathy Lanier's excellent ability to make sure we are getting the best service the MPD can provide — and enjoy the peace of mind that goes with that.

Yes...I'm just wondering why MPD doesn't blog themselves... the news we get in the "sphere" is always disjointed.

Frankly, we want the details? The physical description of those involved...details surrounding possible motives... follow up?

I just think if they actually got Web 2.0 savvy, the MPD could have such an amazing impact.
