Fire Last Night

Several apartments in the Washington Apartments in the 1300 block of 6th Street were destroyed in a major fire last night about 1:00 a.m. According to news reports, about 40 residents have been displaced. The picture is the scene this morning after the fire. (See Life in Mt. Vernon Square for more pictures.)

I was wondering if anyone Knows if there is any neighborhood effort to help out the folks who have lost their homes and possessions and/or have had to move out temporarily?

yes cary silverman is a point of contact, check www.mountvernonsquare.org for his contact & he can direct where to donate. It'll probably be red cross.

xzkdani have found the United Way to be a far better local organization in terms of preparedness for supplying relief and other support. red cross is good for natural disasters etc. and donations cannot be made site specific. with all the wonderful churches and other houses of worship around here you'd think they'd be already there.

If the churches in ANC2C02 are not already aware, when I hand out Commissioner Chapple's newsletter to them today, I will personally make sure to inform the pastors or church officers.

The real question is whether ANC2C commission will hold an emergency meeting to address the needs of residents affected by the fire.

given their performance thus far i'd say the ANC Chair and VP are not able to do anything without their puppet master.

I am sure the ANC could respond by expending funds to provide these apartments with wrought iron tree boxes with gold plaques.
